New Book

May 12, 2018

I've just finished a series of illustrations for a book I wrote recently. It's been a really lovely experience because the story and the illustrations came really easily. I didn't need to push or fret about them and they seemed to have a life of their own. Why? Probably because I went back to basics. Having spent the last six months in front of screen working in either Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop I didn't think I could stomach anymore...so I initially decided to work with ink and a stick! I made some lovely fluid drawings at university this way so I set up an easel so I could free up my arms and was going to create a light box and try a method I remember Quentin Blake talking about - he would create loose ink drawings and then tidy them up tracing them again using said light box. I tried a few different implements from a dipping nib, a feather to a wooden lolly stick but it didn't seem quite right...so I went back to something I got used to doing whilst wandering around dockyards and harbours drawing from life. I was experimenting with different media at the time trying to find something I felt comfortable with and after using  charcoal, graphite, ink, ball points, even soot which I know sounds really mundane I quickly discovered that my preferred drawing method for pretty much anything is using a (preferably small) notebook and a black fine tip ball point pen, so that's how I started to create the illustrations for this book.

Now all I have to do is find a publisher...
